Framed Stegosaurus Dorsal Plate - Morrison Formation
This is an authentic fossilized dorsal plate fragment from a Stegosaurus, one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable dinosaurs of all time. Stegosaurus was a massive armored herbivore famous for the distinctive rows of large, kite-shaped bony plates that ran along its back, as well as the deadly spiked tail (thagomizer) used for defense. These impressive plates grew in two alternating rows along the animal's spine and are believed to have served multiple functions, including visual display for species recognition and mate attraction, thermoregulation to help control body temperature, and possibly defense against predators like Allosaurus. These Late Jurassic giants roamed what is now North America approximately 155–145 million years ago.
Sourced from the renowned Morrison Formation, this specimen comes from ancient floodplain and river environments that preserve some of the finest Jurassic dinosaur fossils in the world. The Morrison Formation is legendary among paleontologists, yielding iconic species such as Stegosaurus, Allosaurus, Diplodocus, and Brachiosaurus.
The frame includes an image of a Stegosaurus skeleton, and a fossil description that reads "This is an authentic fossilized dorsal plate bone from a Stegosaurus, the iconic armored dinosaur of the Late Jurassic. These large bony plates grew in two alternating rows along the animal’s back. Scientists believe they were used primarily for visual display, temperature control, and possibly defense."
