Framed Dinosaur Eggshell - Late Cretaceous, France
This is an authentic fragment of dinosaur eggshell from the Late Cretaceous period (Maastrichtian Stage), approximately 72–66 million years ago. These remarkable specimens were collected from deposits in Meze, Southern France — a locality considerably rarer than the more commonly known egg sites at Aix-en-Provence. The eggshell fragments from this region belong to the dinosaur oogenera Megaloolithus and Cairanoolithus, offering a fascinating glimpse into dinosaur reproduction during the final chapter of the Mesozoic Era.
Megaloolithus eggs are primarily associated with titanosaur sauropods — massive long-necked herbivores that dominated Late Cretaceous ecosystems. These nearly spherical eggs could reach up to 30 centimeters across, with characteristically thick shells exceeding 1.5mm. Cairanoolithus, on the other hand, is thought to belong to a non-ornithopod ornithischian dinosaur, possibly the armored nodosaurid Struthiosaurus. Complete Cairanoolithus eggs were large (15–19cm wide) and spherical, with surfaces ranging from smooth to subtly ridged with pits and grooves. The study of these eggshells helps paleontologists understand the diversity of dinosaurs that inhabited prehistoric Europe during the twilight of the dinosaur age.
