Framed Giant Armadillo scutes
This is an authentic pair of associated bony scutes from the armored carapace of Holmesina septentrionalis, an extinct giant armadillo of the Pleistocene epoch.
Holmesina septentrionalis was a massive, heavily armored herbivorous mammal and one of the largest pampatheres (giant armadillo relatives). Reaching lengths of up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) and weighing around 227 kilograms (500 pounds), these impressive creatures possessed a flexible carapace made of hundreds of movable bony scutes. Unlike their more rigid glyptodont cousins, this armor allowed greater mobility while still providing strong protection. They roamed the grasslands, floodplains, and woodlands of North America during the Pleistocene (approximately 3.5 million to 15,000 years ago), until their extinction at the end of the Ice Age.
This specimen comes from the renowned Pleistocene deposits in Florida — classic Ice Age fossil country known for its exceptionally preserved fossils, including mammoths, mastodons, ground sloths, saber-toothed cats, and other giant mammals.
